"Black Horsemen" Video Receives Enthusiastic Response at ASHA Annual Meeting

NewsAn often overlooked but important part of the Saddlebred horse industry are the many contributions by African Americans to the breed. "The Black Horsemen," produced by the American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA), chronicles the heros that persevered despite the many racial barriers. Some interesting stories include:
◆Tom Bass, who was personally called on by five presidents, once sold a horse to Buffalo "Wild Bill" Cody for his traveling rodeo.
◆World Heavy Weight Champion Joe Lewis, an avid horsemen, helped organize the first all-negro horse show.
◆Artist William Hawkins received his inspiration to paint folk art horses from his childhood exposure to champion Peavine 85 on his grandfather's farm.
Darren Platt of Post Time Productions edited the video that included many rare historical photos and footage. Neil Kesterson of Dynamix Productions provided sound design, while ASHA member and Hillcroft Farm owner Misdee Wrigley Miller narrated the video.
